Thyroid hormone receptor gamma (TR-gamma)

Target
TR-gamma
Molecular classification
Nuclear receptor, Transcription factor, NR1A family
01

Overview

Thyroid hormone receptor gamma is a non-canonical or species-specific isoform of the thyroid hormone receptor family, which primarily consists of the alpha and beta subtypes in humans. While thyroid hormone receptors (TRs) are well-characterized nuclear receptors that act as ligand-dependent transcription factors to regulate growth, development, and metabolic homeostasis, the 'gamma' designation is not a standard human therapeutic target. In humans, the THRA and THRB genes encode the functional TR-alpha and TR-beta receptors, respectively. The term 'Thyroid hormone receptor gamma' may occasionally appear in older literature or in studies of non-mammalian species such as Xenopus laevis, but it does not correspond to a recognized human protein or a target for current drug development. Most therapeutic efforts in this space focus on TR-beta selectivity for treating metabolic conditions like non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH).
