Overview

Thyroid inflammation, clinically referred to as thyroiditis, is a general term describing several disorders that cause inflammation of the thyroid gland. It is not a specific molecular target like a receptor or enzyme, but rather a clinical condition or pathological process often driven by autoimmune attacks, infections, or drug-induced damage. Key molecular entities involved in the pathophysiology of thyroid inflammation include thyroid peroxidase (TPO), thyroglobulin (Tg), and the thyroid-stimulating hormone receptor (TSHR), which often serve as autoantigens. The condition typically follows a triphasic clinical course involving an initial thyrotoxic phase due to the release of preformed hormones, followed by a hypothyroid phase as the gland is depleted, and finally a recovery or euthyroid phase. Therapeutic management focuses on controlling inflammation with nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) or corticosteroids and managing thyroid dysfunction through hormone replacement therapy or beta-blockers. Because the term 'Thyroid inflammation' describes a disease state rather than a single therapeutic target, it is considered an incorrect entry for molecular-level target annotation.
