The envelope (E) protein of the tick-borne encephalitis virus (TBEV) is a glycoprotein and the major structural component of the mature virion. It plays critical roles in viral entry, membrane fusion, assembly, and immune recognition. The E protein consists of four domains and contains two transmembrane segments important for membrane anchoring and interactions during virion assembly. It mediates low-pH-induced fusion between viral and host membranes during cell entry and interacts with prM during particle maturation. The E protein is also a primary target for neutralizing antibodies and vaccine development due to its surface exposure on virions.
