Overview

Tidal volume delivery via inspiratory pressure modulation is a clinical concept in mechanical ventilation rather than a biological molecule or therapeutic target. It refers to a method of delivering a breath where the ventilator applies a constant, preset pressure during the inspiratory phase, and the resulting tidal volume is determined by the patient's lung compliance and airway resistance (StatPearls, 2023). This mechanism is the defining characteristic of Pressure-Controlled Ventilation (PCV) and Pressure Support Ventilation (PSV), which are used to manage patients with respiratory failure or those undergoing general anesthesia (PubMed, 2022). Because this is a mechanical process regulated by medical devices, it does not have a molecular structure, classification, or pharmacological interaction profile typical of drug targets. Clinical management focuses on optimizing pressure settings to ensure adequate gas exchange while minimizing the risk of ventilator-induced lung injury (VILI) (NIH, 2021). Consequently, there are no drugs that directly target this process, although pharmacological agents like sedatives and neuromuscular blockers are often used to facilitate patient-ventilator synchrony.
