Overview

Tigger transposable element-derived protein 5 (TIGD5) is a nuclear DNA-binding protein encoded by the TIGD5 gene situated at chromosome 8q24.3. It belongs to the tigger subfamily of the pogo superfamily, evolutionary descendants of DNA-mediated transposons originally found in fungi, nematodes, and closely related to other eukaryotic transposases. TIGD5 is structurally similar to major mammalian centromere proteins (such as centromere protein B). Its molecular function is annotated as nucleic acid binding, although the precise biological role remains obscure. Recent data suggest TIGD5 has a context-specific biological function in ovarian cancer, where it is frequently co-amplified with the MYC oncogene; paradoxically, higher TIGD5 expression correlates with poor prognosis but appears to suppress growth, adhesion, and invasion in model cell lines, supporting a putative tumor suppressor function. No drugs, directed therapies, or pharmacological modulators target TIGD5, nor does it have recognized involvement in other diseases or cellular signaling pathways.
