Tight junction-associated protein 1 (TJAP1) is a peripheral membrane protein involved in the formation and maintenance of tight junctions, crucial for paracellular barrier function in epithelial and endothelial cells. It is incorporated into tight junctions at a late stage of junction assembly. The protein also localizes to the Golgi apparatus and may play a role in vesicle trafficking and in regulating Golgi structure. Multiple alternatively spliced transcript variants are described, and a pseudogene is found on the X chromosome. While TJAP1 has thousands of functional associations, there is currently little direct evidence supporting its use as a therapeutic target or established biomarker[1][2][4][5][6].
