Timothy Grass Major Allergen (Phl p 1)

Target
Phl p 1
Molecular classification
Glycoprotein, Allergen
01

Overview

Phl p 1 is the major allergen from timothy grass (*Phleum pratense*), recognized by more than 90% of individuals allergic to grass pollen. It is a glycoprotein localized in the cytoplasm and outer layer of mature pollen grains, released upon hydration during pollination. Phl p 1 triggers strong IgE responses in allergic individuals, leading to respiratory symptoms such as allergic rhinitis and asthma exacerbations. It induces the release of pro-inflammatory mediators from respiratory epithelial cells. Measurement of specific IgE against Phl p 1 helps confirm sensitization due to genuine exposure to timothy or related grasses.

Mechanism of action

Not applicable - Phl p 1 is an allergen, not a drug target. However, drugs targeting downstream effects (e.g., antihistamines, corticosteroids) are used to manage the allergic response.
