Phl p 5 is a major allergen found in timothy grass pollen, responsible for triggering allergic rhinitis and bronchial asthma. It exists in two isoforms, Phl p 5a and Phl p 5b, and is recognized by IgE antibodies in a high percentage of grass pollen-allergic patients. While possessing ribonuclease activity, its primary clinical relevance lies in its role as a diagnostic marker and therapeutic target for allergy testing and immunotherapy.
Allergen-specific immunotherapy aims to desensitize the patient to Phl p 5 by repeated exposure to gradually increasing doses of the allergen, modifying the immune response.
