Timothy grass pollen antigen refers to a group of allergenic proteins found in the pollen of Timothy grass (Phleum pratense), a major cause of seasonal allergic rhinitis (hay fever) and conjunctivitis. Key allergens include Phl p 1 (a beta-expansin), Phl p 2, Phl p 3, Phl p 4, and Phl p 6. These antigens trigger IgE-mediated and T-cell mediated immune responses in allergic individuals, leading to inflammation and allergic symptoms. Extracts containing these antigens are used for diagnosis (skin prick tests) and treatment (sublingual immunotherapy).
Allergen immunotherapy aims to desensitize the patient by repeated exposure to the allergen, modifying the immune response. Antihistamines block histamine receptors, and corticosteroids reduce inflammation.
