Tissue Acidosis Buffering via Histidine-Based Buffer System (None)

01

Overview

The histidine-based buffer system is a physiological mechanism that utilizes the amino acid histidine and its derivatives to buffer changes in tissue pH, particularly during conditions of acidosis. This system plays a crucial role in maintaining acid-base homeostasis within muscle and other tissues by mitigating drops in pH that occur during metabolic activity or pathological states. It functions through the protonation and deprotonation of the imidazole ring of histidine, particularly when histidine is incorporated into proteins such as carnosine.
