Overview

Tissue adhesion refers to the biological phenomena and molecular interactions that maintain the integrity and structure of tissues by holding cells together or anchoring them to the extracellular matrix[1][4][9]. It is mediated primarily by cell adhesion molecules, such as cadherins, integrins, selectins, and immunoglobulin superfamily members, as well as ECM proteins like collagen and laminin[3][9]. These mechanisms are essential for organizing tissues during development, maintaining tissue architecture, enabling cell signaling, and regulating processes such as morphogenesis and wound healing. Abnormalities in the molecules mediating tissue adhesion are linked to diseases such as cancer, inflammation, and fibrosis. Note: "Tissue adhesion" is a general process and not a single, actionable molecular target or receptor. For a therapeutic or research target, focus should be on specific molecules (for example, "E-cadherin" or "Integrin beta-1").
