Target intelligence / Profile preview
Tissue chromophores are endogenous molecules, such as hemoglobin, melanin, and water, that possess the ability to absorb light at specific wavelengths, forming the basis for various diagnostic and therapeutic applications (StatPearls, 2023). These molecules serve as the primary targets for laser-based interventions and photodynamic therapy (PDT), where light absorption triggers localized thermal or chemical effects (National Cancer Institute, 2023). Hemoglobin is a key target in the treatment of vascular malformations, while melanin is targeted for the removal of pigmented lesions and hair (PubMed, 2021). The principle of selective photothermolysis allows for the precise destruction of these targets by matching the laser wavelength to the chromophore's absorption peak, thereby sparing surrounding healthy tissue (NIH, 2023). Additionally, exogenous chromophores or photosensitizers like porfimer sodium can be introduced to enhance the targeting of malignant cells (NCBI, 2022). Understanding the concentration and distribution of these chromophores is essential for optimizing treatment parameters and monitoring patient response through biomarkers like oxygen saturation and melanin indices.
Selective photothermolysis and photochemical activation where light energy is absorbed by the chromophore to induce localized thermal damage or generate reactive oxygen species (StatPearls, 2023).
