Tissue Physical Adhesion

Molecular classification
Extracellular Matrix, Cell Adhesion Molecule, Structural Protein
01

Overview

Tissue physical adhesion refers to the process by which two or more tissues become physically connected, either through normal biological mechanisms like ECM sharing and cell-cell adhesion, or pathologically as fibrous adhesions post-injury/surgery/infection. While transient adhesions are crucial for wound healing and development, persistent pathological adhesions can cause pain, obstruction, and organ dysfunction. Key molecular components include ECM proteins (e.g., collagen, fibronectin), cell surface molecules (e.g., cadherins), and matrix enzymes involved in fibrinolysis.

Mechanism of action

Varied depending on specific approach. Anti-inflammatories reduce inflammation driving adhesion formation. Anti-adhesion barriers physically separate tissues during healing. Fibrinolytic agents degrade fibrin.
