Overview

A tissue plane is an anatomical potential space located between layers of fascia, muscles, or organs, characterized by loose connective tissue that facilitates movement and structural organization (StatPearls, 2023). These planes are not molecular targets such as receptors or enzymes, but rather macroscopic structures essential for surgical navigation and regional anesthesia. In surgery, following these natural cleavage lines allows for the separation of tissues with minimal bleeding and trauma (Wikipedia, 2024). Pathologically, tissue planes can act as conduits for the spread of necrotizing infections or the local invasion of tumors (PubMed, 2021). In the context of pharmacology, they serve as the anatomical site for the deposition of local anesthetics in fascial plane blocks, such as the Transversus Abdominis Plane (TAP) block, to provide regional analgesia (NIH, 2022). Understanding the specific anatomy of these planes is crucial for avoiding complications like nerve injury or vascular puncture during invasive procedures.

Mechanism of action

Not applicable as a molecular target; tissue planes serve as anatomical compartments for the localized delivery and diffusion of drugs, particularly local anesthetics in regional anesthesia.
