Tissue Replacements

Molecular classification
Engineered biological substitutes, Biomaterials, Cell-based therapies
01

Overview

Tissue replacements are engineered biological substitutes designed to restore, maintain, or improve the function of damaged or diseased tissues and organs. They involve seeding living cells onto a scaffold, stimulating cell growth and differentiation, and implanting the construct into the patient. The scaffold degrades over time, and the resident cells produce new extracellular matrix, restoring tissue function. Examples include skin grafts, bioengineered bladders, and artificial blood vessels.
