Overview

Tissue tropism refers to the specificity or preference of a virus, bacterium, or parasite to infect and grow in certain types of cells or tissues within a host organism[1][2][3][6][7][9]. It is largely determined by the interaction between pathogen surface molecules (such as viral glycoproteins) and specific receptors on host cells. Factors influencing tissue tropism include the presence of cellular receptors permitting pathogen entry, the availability of host transcription factors, and other host-pathogen dynamics. The concept is central in infectious disease research and helps explain why certain pathogens cause disease in specific tissues or organs[1][2][3][5][6][7][8][9].
