Tissue-type plasminogen activator (tPA) is a serine protease enzyme primarily responsible for catalyzing the conversion of plasminogen to plasmin, the major enzyme involved in breaking down blood clots (fibrinolysis). It is found on endothelial cells lining blood vessels and plays a central role in maintaining vascular patency by dissolving fibrin clots. Recombinant forms are used as thrombolytic agents for acute ischemic stroke, myocardial infarction, and pulmonary embolism.
