Tissue volumization by space-filling effect

Overview

"Tissue volumization by space-filling effect" describes the augmentation of tissues via injection of substances (fillers) that occupy space, restoring volume and contour to aging or deficient soft tissues. Most commonly, this involves the use of hydrophilic gels, such as hyaluronic acid, collagen fibers, or other biocompatible polymers, which add volume by physically filling compartments within or beneath the skin. In some cases, these fillers also promote tissue remodeling by stimulating fibroblasts and new collagen formation, contributing to longer-term structural support. This concept is central to modern non-surgical facial rejuvenation and reconstructive procedures, but is not itself a molecular target.

Mechanism of action

Physical space-filling: The material occupies the injected space and exerts a lifting or contouring effect. For some products, biostimulation: some fillers also stimulate fibroblast activity and collagen production.
