Target intelligence / Profile preview
Titanium tetrafluoride (TiF4) is an inorganic metal halide compound primarily utilized as a topical pharmacological agent in preventative dentistry (PubChem, CID 24541). It is not a biological target such as a protein receptor or enzyme; rather, it is a therapeutic agent that interacts with the mineral components of teeth. When applied to the tooth surface, TiF4 undergoes a chemical reaction with hydroxyapatite to form a tenacious, acid-resistant layer composed of titanium dioxide and calcium fluoride (Comar et al., 2012). This unique 'glaze' provides superior protection against dental erosion and caries compared to standard fluorides by significantly reducing enamel solubility. Additionally, the compound is highly effective at sealing exposed dentinal tubules, making it a potent treatment for dentin hypersensitivity (Teixeira et al., 2018). Due to its characteristically low pH, clinical application must be performed carefully by professionals to prevent chemical irritation of the surrounding gingival tissues.
Titanium tetrafluoride reacts with dental hydroxyapatite to form a protective, acid-resistant glaze-like layer of titanium dioxide and calcium fluoride, while simultaneously promoting deep fluoride uptake into the enamel matrix (Magalhães et al., 2011).
