TM4SF19 antisense RNA 1 (TM4SF19-AS1) is a long non-coding RNA that does not encode a protein. It is highly expressed in head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) cells and tissues. Functional studies show that its knockdown impairs cell proliferation, migration, invasion, and epithelial-mesenchymal transition in HNSCC cell lines, as well as tumor growth in vivo. Mechanistically, TM4SF19-AS1 acts in the cytoplasm as a competing endogenous RNA (ceRNA), sponging microRNA-153-3p to upregulate its target LAMC1, and also interacts with the RNA-binding protein HNRNPC to stabilize LAMC1 mRNA. These results suggest TM4SF19-AS1 plays an oncogenic role in HNSCC and may be of clinical value as a novel biomarker, but it is not considered a classical therapeutic target like a receptor, enzyme, or transporter[1][3].
