TMEM18 divergent transcript (TMEM18-DT; AC092159.2) is a long non-coding RNA (lncRNA) gene, annotated in the human genome in divergence to the protein-coding TMEM18 gene. It does not encode a protein and is not a known therapeutic target such as a receptor, enzyme, transporter, or transcription factor. There is currently no published evidence for TMEM18-DT’s involvement as a biomarker, drug target, or key player in specific disease pathways. Instead, the gene is cataloged mainly through its genomic location and transcriptional activity near TMEM18. Most disease and function studies in this locus focus on the protein TMEM18, which is linked to obesity, cell migration, and potential chromatin organization, not the non-coding transcript TMEM18-DT[4][5]. Key distinctions: TMEM18-DT is not the same as TMEM18. The latter encodes a nuclear membrane protein with reported roles in transcriptional repression and chromatin binding, and has been associated with obesity and cell migration[1][2][3][5]. TMEM18-DT, however, is a non-coding transcript with largely unknown function as of current data[4].
