Overview

TMEM26 antisense RNA 1 (TMEM26-AS1) is an antisense long non-coding RNA (lncRNA), transcribed from the DNA strand opposite to the protein-coding gene TMEM26. Antisense RNAs, in general, play roles in the regulation of gene expression at transcriptional and post-transcriptional levels. They can impact gene expression via mechanisms such as transcriptional interference, epigenetic modifications, or direct hybridization to sense mRNA transcripts, ultimately resulting in stabilization, degradation, or translational inhibition of the corresponding mRNA[2]. TMEM26-AS1 itself is not a protein, receptor, enzyme, or druggable therapeutic target, but a regulatory RNA. There is no published evidence TMEM26-AS1 is directly targeted by any approved or investigational drug, nor is it cited as a clinical biomarker, nor is its safety relevant as a therapeutic target. While its sense mRNA/coding partner TMEM26 has established links to breast cancer biology, particularly in endocrine therapy resistance and tumor recurrence[1][3], there is currently no specific, structured or functional information for TMEM26-AS1. Note: - TMEM26-AS1 should not be confused with the protein-coding TMEM26 (transmembrane protein 26), which is functionally and therapeutically distinct and reported in breast cancer biology[1][3]. - TMEM26-AS1 is not listed as a therapeutic target—there is insufficient information about its functional role, druggability, or clinical significance[2].
