Overview

TMEM72 antisense RNA 1 (TMEM72-AS1) is a long non-coding RNA gene located on chromosome 10. It is classified as an antisense RNA because it is transcribed from the opposite DNA strand relative to the TMEM72 protein-coding gene locus. TMEM72-AS1 does not encode a protein. The specific biological function of TMEM72-AS1 remains unknown, though, as with other lncRNAs, it could potentially regulate gene expression at the transcriptional or post-transcriptional level. Large genomic datasets report TMEM72-AS1 expression in multiple tissues and highlight its presence in disease and normal tissue expression studies. However, there is no direct evidence establishing it as a therapeutic target, nor is it known to be involved in drug responses or used as a clinical biomarker[2][1][9][8][3][4]. No clear errors are evident with the identification or usage of this target, but the lack of functional annotation, absence of therapeutic targeting, and minimal disease linkage indicate TMEM72-AS1 is primarily of interest for research into non-coding RNA function, rather than as a canonical drug discovery target.
