Overview

TMEM9B antisense RNA 1 (TMEM9B-AS1) is a human-specific long non-coding RNA that regulates ribosomal biogenesis in skeletal muscle by facilitating the stabilization of MYC mRNA through direct interaction with the RNA binding protein IGF2BP1[2][6][5]. TMEM9B-AS1 expression is reduced in skeletal muscle of individuals with type 2 diabetes and sarcopenia, leading to impaired ribosomal biogenesis, decreased protein synthesis, and subsequent muscle loss[2][5]. While broadly expressed across human tissues, its characterized physiological role is in the maintenance of muscle mass and translational capacity[2][5][6]. TMEM9B-AS1 is not a conventional drug target such as a receptor or enzyme and currently is not known to interact with specific drugs or act as a biomarker.
