TNF alpha induced protein 2 (TNFAIP2) is a protein-coding gene whose expression is upregulated in response to tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNFα) and other cytokines. It acts as a multi-functional mediator with established roles in inflammation, angiogenesis, regulation of cell migration and proliferation, and the formation of tunneling nanotubes (TNTs) that connect cells for intercellular communication. TNFAIP2 is induced via the NF-κB pathway in immune and endothelial cells, and interacts with the cytoskeleton and exocyst complex during cell migration. Aberrant expression has been implicated in a variety of cancers, serving as both a diagnostic and prognostic biomarker in specific tumor types. TNFAIP2 is considered a candidate therapeutic target due to its functions in cancer biology and immune regulation, although approved drugs specifically targeting this protein do not yet exist.
Not applicable for direct drugs (since none are clinically used), but hypothetical mechanisms in development focus on inhibition or gene-editing to alter cancer cell proliferation and migration. Potential knockdown or genetic editing used to block angiogenesis, migration, and tunneling nanotube formation in cancer.
