Overview

Tobacco carbohydrate refers to the diverse collection of saccharides and polysaccharides found naturally within the Nicotiana tabacum plant or added during tobacco processing (MDPI, 2020). This class encompasses simple mono- and disaccharides like glucose and sucrose, as well as complex structural polymers such as cellulose, hemicellulose, and pectin (MDPI, 2020). While they serve essential biological roles in plant energy storage and structural integrity, they are not recognized as therapeutic targets in human medicine; instead, they are primarily significant as precursors to toxic substances in tobacco smoke (ACS, 2022). During the combustion of tobacco, these carbohydrates undergo pyrolysis to generate hazardous volatile compounds, including established carcinogens like formaldehyde and acrolein (MDPI, 2020; ACS, 2022). Furthermore, the combustion of sugars produces acetaldehyde, a pharmacologically active byproduct that may act synergistically with nicotine to increase the addictive potential of tobacco (ResearchGate, 2015). In the field of molecular farming, tobacco-specific glycans on recombinant proteins are a noted safety concern due to their potential to induce immunogenic responses in human recipients (MDPI, 2020).
