Overview

Tobacco-derived antigens refer to a heterogeneous group of immunogenic molecules found in tobacco leaves and smoke, including tobacco glycoprotein (TGP), bombesin-like peptides, and nicotine-based haptens. These antigens are significant in both the pathogenesis of smoking-related diseases and the development of therapeutic interventions. For instance, TGP is known to activate macrophages and induce the secretion of pro-inflammatory cytokines, contributing to the development of conditions like pulmonary Langerhans cell histiocytosis (PLCH) and Buerger's disease (thromboangiitis obliterans). In the context of addiction medicine, tobacco-derived nicotine is conjugated to carrier proteins to create antigens for smoking cessation vaccines. These vaccines aim to elicit a robust immune response, producing antibodies that bind nicotine in the bloodstream and prevent it from reaching the brain, thereby neutralizing its reinforcing effects. Additionally, tobacco plants are frequently used in molecular farming to produce recombinant antigens for various other vaccines, though these are distinct from the plant's native immunogenic components.
