Overview

TOMM40 pseudogene 1 (TOMM40P1) is a processed pseudogene located on chromosome 14 (chr14:19266948-19268660, hg38) that is highly homologous to the functional TOMM40 gene[1]. TOMM40P1 produces RNA transcripts that are detectable in human tissues and cell lines; however, these RNAs do not code for a functional protein and their biological function, if any, remains poorly defined[1]. The presence of TOMM40P1 and other related pseudogenes complicates accurate measurement of TOMM40 gene expression due to high sequence similarity and cross-amplification in gene expression assays[1]. It is hypothesized that TOMM40 pseudogene transcripts could either act as regulatory RNAs or serve as RNA buffers for transcriptional or post-transcriptional regulation, but no definitive evidence currently supports this[1]. TOMM40P1 is not regarded as a protein-coding gene, receptor, enzyme, transporter, or other canonical drug target, nor is it known to be the direct target of any drugs or used as a biomarker.
