Tooth–dentin interface

Overview

The "tooth/dentin interface" refers to the anatomical junctiones (primarily the dentinoenamel junction [DEJ] in the crown and dentinocemental junction [DCJ] in the root) where dentin meets either enamel or cementum, or to the interface where dentin abuts the pulp within the tooth[1][7][9]. Dentin is a calcified connective tissue, softer than enamel and surrounds the pulp, and is permeated by dentinal tubules containing odontoblast processes and fluid[1][5][7]. The structural arrangement at these interfaces helps dissipate force, protect against fracture, and mediates transmission of stimuli (mechanical, thermal, chemical) that can result in pain if the dentin is exposed[3][5][7]. The "interface" itself is not a discrete protein, receptor, or targetable molecule, but a complex anatomical region critical to dental health and disease.
