Tooth enamel is the highly mineralized outer layer of teeth, composed primarily of hydroxyapatite. It provides a protective barrier against physical and chemical damage. While enamel cannot regenerate, it can undergo limited remineralization. Its primary function is to protect the underlying dentin and pulp from mechanical forces, temperature extremes, and acids. The mineral composition includes calcium, phosphate, magnesium, and fluoride. Its structural organization into rods contributes to its hardness and brittleness.
Fluoride enhances remineralization of enamel and inhibits bacterial acid production. Chlorhexidine is an antibacterial agent that reduces plaque formation. Xylitol inhibits bacterial metabolism.
