Tooth Enamel Mineralization

Molecular classification
Biological process
01

Overview

Tooth enamel mineralization is the biological process by which dental enamel—the hardest and most highly mineralized tissue in vertebrates—is formed and matured. This process is orchestrated primarily by specialized cells called ameloblasts, which regulate the deposition, organization, and maturation of enamel's mineral content. Enamel mineralization occurs in two main stages: Secretory Stage, and Maturation Stage. Disruptions at any stage can lead to hypomineralized or structurally abnormal enamel—a condition known as "enamel hypoplasia" or other developmental defects—which increases susceptibility to caries or structural failure under stress.
