Overview

Toxin A is a large, protein-based exotoxin produced by certain strains of the bacterium *Clostridium difficile*. It is one of two major toxins (the other being Toxin B) responsible for the pathogenesis of *C. difficile*-associated diseases, particularly antibiotic-associated diarrhea and pseudomembranous colitis. Toxin A disrupts the actin cytoskeleton in human intestinal epithelial cells and causes inflammation and cell death in intestinal tissues.
