Overview

TPTE2 pseudogene 1 (TPTE2P1) is a genomic sequence highly homologous to the TPTE2 protein-coding gene. Unlike TPTE2, which is a membrane-associated lipid phosphatase active in the metabolism of inositol phospholipids and is involved in signal transduction (and potentially tumor suppression)[1][2], TPTE2P1 does not produce a functional protein. As with other pseudogenes, TPTE2P1 may exert biological effects at the RNA level, such as acting as a competitive endogenous RNA (ceRNA) that sponges microRNAs or modulates the stability of related transcripts[3][4]. While pseudogenes like PTENP1 are known to influence disease by regulating their parental gene, there is currently no specific evidence for TPTE2P1 being clinically actionable or recognized as a therapeutic target. Its molecular classification is therefore as a "pseudogene" and it does not fit commonly targeted categories such as enzyme or receptor. If searching for a drug target, focus should be placed on the TPTE2 gene (Transmembrane phosphoinositide 3-phosphatase and tensin homolog 2), not its pseudogene TPTE2P1[1][2].
