Trace amine-associated receptor 2 (TAAR2) is a member of the G protein-coupled receptor (GPCR) superfamily, originally characterized as an olfactory receptor but now known to be expressed in limbic brain regions and the immune system[1][3]. TAAR2 responds to trace amines, structurally related to classical monoamine neurotransmitters, as well as certain exogenous compounds such as 3-iodothyronamine[1]. In the mouse brain, TAAR2 influences dopamine levels, neuronal activity, and adult neurogenesis, and knockout studies reveal significant alterations in behavior and neurochemistry[3]. While TAAR2's role in human disease is still being elucidated, the TAAR family, including TAAR2, is under investigation as a novel target for neuropsychiatric disorders such as depression, anxiety, and bipolar disorder[4][5]. There are currently no selective clinical drugs or approved biomarkers for TAAR2, and therapeutic targeting is at the preclinical research stage.
