Overview

Trace amine-associated receptor 6 (TAAR6) is a member of the trace amine-associated receptor family, which is a subset of G protein-coupled receptors characterized by seven transmembrane domains[1][2][3][5]. It is encoded by the TAAR6 gene clustered on chromosome 6q23 in humans[2][3]. TAAR6 is thought to be a receptor for endogenous trace amines—small biogenic amines structurally similar to classic neurotransmitters like dopamine and serotonin[1][3][5]. It is expressed at low levels in the brain, particularly in the limbic regions, including the prefrontal cortex and nucleus accumbens, and may play roles in modulating neurotransmission, neurogenesis, and innate behaviors[1][4][5]. Variations in TAAR6 have been genetically associated with risk for neuropsychiatric conditions, but no clear causative or therapeutic mechanism has been established[2][5]. There are currently no known marketed drugs or clinical candidates specifically targeting TAAR6, and it is not used as a biomarker or therapeutic target in routine clinical care.
