Trans-epidermal Water Loss (TEWL)

TEWL
Molecular classification
Physiological Parameter, Biophysical Process
01

Overview

Trans-epidermal water loss (TEWL) is the process by which water passively evaporates from the skin’s surface into the surrounding environment. It is a physiological phenomenon that occurs continuously and serves as an important indicator of skin barrier function. TEWL specifically refers to the amount of water that escapes through the stratum corneum, which is the outermost layer of the epidermis. Maintaining optimal hydration supports both appearance and function of healthy skin barriers.

02

Mechanism of action

N/A - TEWL is a process, not a target for drug action. Interacting substances either increase water content (humectants) or decrease water evaporation (occlusives).
