Overview

Trans-Golgi network integral membrane protein 2 (TGOLN2) is a type I integral membrane glycoprotein localized to the trans-Golgi network, which functions as a major sorting station for secretory and membrane proteins within eukaryotic cells. TGOLN2 cycles between the trans-Golgi network and early endosomes, playing a key role in vesicular trafficking and exocytic vesicle formation. It is also incorporated as an antigen on the envelope of hepatitis E virus, marking the virus's use of intracellular membranes for assembly. Genetic variants of TGOLN2 have been linked to metastatic patterns in some cancers and are upregulated in certain neuropsychiatric conditions, though causality is undemonstrated. Despite these associations, TGOLN2 is not considered a conventional therapeutic or pharmacological target.
