The HIV-1 Tat protein is a small, multifunctional regulatory protein essential for the efficient transcription and replication of the HIV genome. It enhances viral gene expression by increasing RNA polymerase II processivity and modulates host cell functions, contributing to viral pathogenesis and immune evasion. Tat binds specifically to the TAR RNA element and recruits cellular factors like P-TEFb to enhance viral RNA production. It also interacts with various host proteins, altering gene expression and influencing apoptosis and immune responses. Secreted Tat can be taken up by uninfected cells, further contributing to HIV pathogenesis.
