Overview
Transcription factor 20 (TCF20) is a nuclear protein encoded by the TCF20 gene and functions primarily as a transcriptional coactivator. It binds to platelet-derived growth factor-responsive elements, notably in the matrix metalloproteinase 3 (MMP3, also known as stromelysin-1) promoter, and enhances the activity of other transcription factors such as JUN and SP1. TCF20 has a central role in regulating gene transcription and is involved in pathways such as ERK signaling and stem cell pluripotency. Mutations in TCF20 have been linked to neurodevelopmental disorders including autism spectrum disorders and developmental delay, as well as cancer prognosis in certain tumor types.
