Overview

Transcription factor GATA-5 (GATA5) is a zinc finger transcription factor encoded by the GATA5 gene on chromosome 20q13.33. It plays a critical role in cardiac development and morphogenesis, regulating genes required for heart formation and function, including atrial natriuretic factor and various muscle-specific proteins. GATA5 function is essential during embryogenesis, with loss-of-function mutations causing congenital heart disease such as Tetralogy of Fallot in humans and lethal cardiac defects in animal models. GATA5 interacts with other GATA family transcription factors to control downstream genetic programs critical for myocardial, endocardial, and smooth muscle cell differentiation.
