Overview

Transcription factor-like protein ZBTB32, also known as TFIZ1 or TZFP, is a member of the BTB/POZ zinc finger family that functions primarily as a transcriptional repressor. It plays a critical role in the immune system, particularly in regulating the duration and intensity of the germinal center reaction and the maintenance of memory B-cell populations. By binding to specific DNA sequences, ZBTB32 modulates the expression of genes involved in cell cycle progression and cytokine signaling, often acting as a molecular brake on lymphocyte activation. Beyond its role in immunology, ZBTB32 has been implicated in the pathogenesis of Fanconi anemia through its interaction with the FANCC protein and is frequently studied in the context of lymphoid malignancies where its dysregulation can lead to aberrant cell survival. While it is considered a potential therapeutic target for modulating immune memory or treating certain cancers, there are currently no pharmacological agents in clinical use that specifically target this protein.
