Overview

Transcriptional coactivator with PDZ-binding motif (TAZ), encoded by the *WWTR1* gene, is a transcriptional coregulator protein. TAZ plays a central role in regulating gene expression associated with development, cell growth, survival, and inhibition of apoptosis. It acts as a transcriptional coactivator by interacting directly with various transcription factors. TAZ activity is tightly regulated by phosphorylation and the Hippo signaling pathway. Aberrant regulation or overactivity of TAZ has been linked to oncogenesis in several cancers. Deficiency causes developmental defects such as impaired spermatogenesis.
