Overview

XAC0568, also known as MdcY, is a transcriptional regulator belonging to the GntR family, specifically the FadR-like subfamily, in the plant pathogen Xanthomonas axonopodis pv. citri (Xac). This bacterium is the causative agent of citrus canker, a devastating disease affecting citrus crops worldwide. XAC0568 is primarily involved in the regulation of primary metabolism, particularly the malonate decarboxylation (mdc) pathway, by binding to specific DNA sequences in the promoter regions of target genes. Beyond its metabolic role, XAC0568 is hypothesized to contribute to the virulence and survival of the pathogen during the infection process in citrus plants. As a key regulator of bacterial fitness and potentially virulence, it is considered a potential target for the development of novel antibacterial strategies to control citrus canker. Currently, there are no specific drugs or inhibitors targeting XAC0568 in clinical or agricultural use, but its structural characterization through in silico modeling has provided insights into its potential as a therapeutic target for disrupting bacterial growth or pathogenicity.
