Transferrin and Ferritin

01

Overview

Transferrin and ferritin are distinct, well-characterized proteins involved in iron metabolism. Transferrin is a glycoprotein responsible for the transport of iron in the blood, binding Fe3+, and delivering it via the transferrin receptor into cells by receptor-mediated endocytosis. Ferritin is a globular intracellular protein complex that stores iron in a nontoxic, soluble form, releasing it in a controlled manner to meet cellular needs, and is also detectable in blood as a marker of stored iron[2][3][7]. Both are tightly regulated to maintain iron homeostasis and prevent toxicity. The two are not a single therapeutic target but separate entities whose functions are coordinated in iron regulation and are relevant as biomarkers in iron-related diseases, especially anemia, iron overload, infection, and malignancy[6][7]. Because the input refers to both together without specificity or context for a single molecule, it is not possible to provide canonical or structured information for a unique target. Each should be considered separately for structured annotation.
