Target intelligence / Profile preview
The transferrin receptor (TfR) is a membrane glycoprotein essential for cellular iron uptake. It mediates the import of iron into cells by binding to transferrin, an iron-carrying plasma glycoprotein, and internalizing the transferrin-iron complex through receptor-mediated endocytosis. It is a target for cancer therapy due to its overexpression on cancer cells.
Targeted delivery of drugs, nanoparticles, immunotoxins, and gene therapy vectors. Direct inhibition can induce cytotoxicity.
