Transferrin receptor-mediated transcytosis (TfR-mediated transcytosis) is a cellular transport mechanism that enables the movement of macromolecules, such as iron-loaded transferrin or therapeutic agents, across physiological barriers like the blood-brain barrier (BBB). This process exploits the natural function of the transferrin receptor (TfR), which is highly expressed on brain endothelial cells and other polarized cell types. It involves receptor-mediated endocytosis, endosomal sorting, and exocytosis/transcellular release.
