Transforming growth factor beta receptor type 2 (TGFBR2) is a critical cell surface receptor involved in the TGF-β signaling pathway, which regulates numerous cellular processes including proliferation, differentiation, apoptosis, and extracellular matrix production. It acts as a tumor suppressor gene by helping prevent uncontrolled cell proliferation. Mutations in the *TGFBR2* gene are linked to several human diseases.
TGFBR2 binds TGF-β ligands, forming a heteromeric complex with TGFBR1. TGFBR2 phosphorylates and activates TGFBR1, which then phosphorylates downstream effectors such as SMAD proteins. These complexes translocate into the nucleus to regulate transcription of target genes.
