Overview

Transforming growth factor beta receptor type 3 (TGFBR3), also known as betaglycan, is a cell-surface proteoglycan that acts as a coreceptor for the transforming growth factor beta (TGF-β) superfamily of ligands. It is the most widely expressed TGF-β receptor and plays a crucial role in mediating ligand binding to other TGF-β receptors, particularly TGFBR2. Unlike type I and II receptors, TGFBR3 does not possess intrinsic kinase activity and is generally considered a non-signaling or accessory/coreceptor within the canonical pathway. Its main function is to present or concentrate these ligands at the cell surface for efficient transfer to signaling receptors such as TGF-beta receptor II (TGFBR2).
