Overview

The transforming growth factor beta (TGF-β) superfamily is a large group of structurally related, secreted cell regulatory proteins that play essential roles in controlling proliferation, differentiation, apoptosis, and other functions across many cell types and tissues. Members are found throughout the animal kingdom and are highly conserved. They signal through heterotetrameric complexes of Type I and Type II serine/threonine kinase receptors, activating SMAD and non-SMAD pathways to regulate gene expression.
