Transient receptor potential cation channel subfamily M member 5 (TRPM5) is a **calcium-activated, non-selective monovalent cation channel** that plays a key role in **taste signal transduction** for bitter, sweet, and umami flavors by mediating depolarization in response to elevated intracellular Ca²⁺[3][4]. TRPM5 is structurally a tetrameric channel with distinct calcium-binding sites, and its activation is critical in **gustatory cells** and also in **pancreatic β-cells** for modulating insulin secretion in response to metabolic cues[1][3][4]. Its physiological roles extend to other chemosensory cells in multiple tissues. The channel is a member of the TRPM (melastatin) subfamily within the larger TRP ion channel family. Its gating and function are strongly modulated by changes in intracellular calcium and membrane potential, providing a link between intracellular signaling and electrical excitability for various sensory and endocrine processes[1][3][4].
